Opera Das Rheingold
The eve of the Bühnenfestspiels »The Ring of the Nibelungs«
Libretto by the composer
Performed in German with German and English supertitles
The well-ordered realm of the Gods is shaken to its core when the Nibelung dwarf, Alberich, steals the Rhine gold from the careless Rhine maidens. This gold, fashioned into a ring, can bestow power over the world, but only when the bearer forswears love for all eternity. Such renunciation seems impossible to the Rhine maidens, yet the power-hungry Alberich is willing to pay this price. Everyone wants to possess the ring; even Wotan, Father of the Gods, is not immune to its allure. After stealing it from Alberich, Wotan in turn loses the ring to the giant Fafner, who even kills his own brother to possess it.
