A role, by the way, in which Ernst made his much-acclaimed debut in 2008 at the Wiener Staatsoper, a stage which he has been closely involved with for many years as member of the ensemble and where he was able to steadily expand his repertory of roles – adding Erik in Der Fliegende Holländer in 2014 for instance.

For all participants it was clear from the beginning that the recording should have the absolute sound of a live performance. Norbert Ernst spelled out this objective as follows: "Just as the audience would experience the pieces on stage, just as I would sing them on stage: that is exactly what they must sound like on this CD. Pace, voice modulation, vocal colour, resonance – nothing should evoke anything fabricated, artificial; moreover, the voice should not dominate in a sterile fashion, but must be brought into a natural acoustic balance with the orchestra.' Authenticity, too, is crucial for Ernst. To him, any prevailing listening habits or, more specifically, any established interpretation standards are out of the question. In producing this CD he wishes to present his Wagner view, his Beethoven view and his Weber view to the listeners and breathe new life into the collected opera excerpts on the strength of his own very personal, unaltered bright tenor voice.
