Julie Unwin is one of the UK’s most successful artists. She studied at the GSMD and the National Opera Studio and earned some of the most distinguished awards in the vocal field. She was the first recipient of the Harold Rosenthal Opera Award; winner of the International Singer of the Year at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod and received both the John Christie Award and Young Singer’s Award from Glyndebourne.
Her portrayals of Tosca, Anna Bolena and Madama Butterfly in London were heralded by the press. Internationally, her performances as Mimi La bohème for Opera Zuid were described as “full, melodious, dramatic” (Wim Hekking). Her performances of the Countess The Marriage of Figaro, a role she sang for Glyndebourne Touring Opera, English Touring Opera and in the London Festivals, suggested she was in “absolute control of her considerable vocal resources” singing the role with “gracious ease” (Opera) and her performances of Euridice Orpheus & Euridice for English National Opera were described as “strong, full voiced” and “effortlessly in command of the stage” (Opera).
Further successful operatic performances included Micäela Carmen for Welsh National Opera and at the Royal Albert Hall for Raymond Gubbay; Alice Ford Falstaff and Giorgetta Il tabarro for English Touring Opera; Pamina The Magic Flute English National Opera; Nancy Silas Marner in Graham Vick’s new production for the City of Birmingham Touring Opera; Donna Anna Don Giovanni and Cornet Christoff Rilke’s Songs of Love and Death Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Tatyana Eugene Onegin Opera Holland Park and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni for Opera della Luna at Iford Arts.
Notable among Julie’s concert performances are L’enfance du Christ with the Helsinki Philharmonic and Northern Sinfonia; Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Helsinki Philharmonic; Mahler Symphony No. 2 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra; Four Last Songs (on which she worked with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa) Mansfield Street Concert Series and recently she sang the Verdi Requiem at the Birmingham Symphony Hall with the Chandos orchestra. She has recorded Cleone Ermione with Glyndebourne Festival Opera for Channel Four and Damigella and Virtue in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea for BBC Wales.
Most recently Julie made her role debut as Lady Billows in Albert Herring for Opéra de Baugé.
