Gioacchino Rossini: »Tancredi« (concertante)
»Tancredi« was Gioacchino Rossini’s breakthrough to success at the European level in 1813 — at the tender age of 21! This drama of love and war featuring a wealth of melodies is set in the Sicilian city Syracuse in the year 1005. After years of feuding, the families Argirio and Orbazzano put aside their differences and form an alliance against the Saracens; Argirio offers the hand of his daughter Amenaide to his former adversary. But she secretly loves Tancredi, a nobleman who has fallen into disfavour with her father.... Just as one expects from Rossini, »Tancredi« is a fireworks display of virtuoso and lyrically inspired arias. The cast for the three lead roles is truly a luxury; the Italian soprano Patrizia Ciofi, the Greek tenor Mario Zeffiri and the Italian mezzo-soprano Marianna Pizzolato have each had their most brilliant successes worldwide with roles of the Belcanto repertory. They will be joined by Ottavio Dantone and his Accademia Bizantina, an orchestra of harmonious refinement and dynamic flexibility that is virtually unsurpassed. We will see if you agree with the composer who is said to have declared after a »Tancredi« performance in 1814: »Everyone enjoys my music!«
