Théâtre de l’Odéon/Opéra de Marseille
Tregedie lyrique in three acts from 1837
Libretto by Salvadore Cammarano (1801 – 1852) after François Ancelot's (1794 – 1854) tragedy Elisabeth d'Angleterre
The unfairly neglected opera Roberto Devereux, with its bel canto poetry, comprises the third part of the series of Donizetti’s operas based on the lives of the English and Scottish queens, Anne Boleyn, Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I. The story is built on changing relationships, then shifting towards the rebellion in 1601. It portrays the ageing queen Elisabeth as an emotionally wounded woman who lives through the mental agony of signing the death sentence of her last lover, Robert Devereux.
