Power, jealousy, love
“Otello lived up to all expectations,” is how the Itä-Savo newspaper headed its review of the premiere. “The production respects both Verdi and Shakespeare.”
Verdi’s clever, complex score of Otello is a taxing one for the singers and players but regally rewards its audience. It is a masterpiece packed with grand emotions: expectation and despair, envy, happiness and love. Olavinlinna Castle is the perfect setting for Shakespeare’s story of power and jealousy.
Though this partnership between the Savonlinna Opera Festival and the Chorégies d’Orange from France keeps faithfully to the original version, its themes, such as xenophobia and fear of all things strange, seem more topical than ever. Conducting the 2018 performances is Hannu Lintu.
