Claudio Monteverdi: »L’Orfeo«, Favola in musica (konzertant)
Despite some predecessors — the hour of birth of the art form of the opera was in 1607, the world premiere in Mantua of »L’Orfeo« by Claudio Monteverdi, subtitled Favola in musica. Monteverdi set the story of the hero Orpheus, who descends into the underworld and, using the power of music, compels Pluto to return his apparently lost bride Eurydice to him, with a power of expression that had never before been experienced. Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L’Arpeggiata proved during the past Music Festival concerts that they can awaken old scores to fresh new life through their great sensitivity and thrilling modern access. Rolando Villazón as Orfeo and Music Festival newcomer Magdalena Kožená as Messagiera lead the prominent cast of singers and promise that their commitment to the music of Monteverdi and its message will still have a strikingly modern impact after more than 400 years!
