Les Contes d’Hoffmann / Tales of Hoffmann
Fantastic opera in five acts
Libretto by Jules Barbier after the play by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, edited by Michael Kaye and Jean-Christophe Keck © Schott Music, Mainz
Performed in French with German and English supertitles
The Tales of Hoffmann are woven around three women, three idealised figures of the male imagination: Olympia, the mechanical doll, Antonia, the artist, and Giulietta, the courtesan. Hoffmann draws his audience ever deeper into bizarre dream worlds while searching for the perfect lover. However, in the mirrored cabinet of his fantasies he gradually loses his grip on reality, finally slipping over the edge.
