Opéra National de Paris
La Bohème – opera in four acts to a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, adapted from the novel Les scènes de la vie de bohème by Henri Murger.
In Italian with German and English surtitles.
The most Parisian Paris, fruit of the Italian Puccini’s imagination, will be conducted today by a Greek with musicians from the Urals, a German directorial team, and international singers. So far, no surprises – for major productions, international casts have long been the norm. But when an ensemble from the Urals under a Greek conductor becomes one of the music world’s most thrilling sensations, we have something out of the ordinary. These musicians succeed just as brilliantly while exploring Mozart and Baroque music as in interpreting the music of Stravinsky. And when was the last time the piano in the famous Habanera was taken so seriously as it was in Currentzis’ illuminating 2010 Carmen production in Baden-Baden? And now La Bohème, the opera still considered today to be Puccini’s most characteristic. It is his finest work, and its many splendid qualities were not surpassed even by the composer’s later operas.
