Third day of the Bühnenfestspiel »The Ring of the Nibelungs« by Richard Wagner
Libretto vom Komponisten
Performed in German with German and English supertitles
The three Norns are weaving the rope of destiny when suddenly it snaps, signalling the twilight of the gods. Siegfried sets off from the Valkyries’ Rock to seek new adventures, leaving behind his beloved Brünnhilde with the ring. In the hall of the Gibichungs he is ensnared by the treacherous plans of Hagen, Alberich’s son, as well as King Gunther and Gutrune. Drugged into forgetfulness by a magic potion, he betrays Brünnhilde and their love for one another, and is murdered. His killers, Gunther and Hagen, fall victim to the ring’s power. Now Brünnhilde clearly sees the truth and determines to return the ring to the Rhine maidens. She joins Siegfried in death, while Valhalla, the seat of the gods, burns down for all eternity.
