After his A Levels Wolfgang Schmidt studied at the conservatory in Frankfurt/Main with Prof. Gruendler. His first engagements as tenor he had in Hof, Kiel und Dortmund. Since 1988 he is member of the opera ensemble at the „Deutsche Oper am Rhein“ in Duesseldorf.
He has sung all of the great Heldentenor parts of the operas of Wagner and Strauss, but also many other parts of dramatic tenors. His guest engagements lead to all the famous opera houses, including Bayreuth Festival (Siegfried, Tristan), Milan Scala, Staatsoper Vienna, Bastille Paris and Metropolitan Opera New York.
After his change of repertoire in 2003 he continued his career with new parts as Mime, Loge (Wagner’s Ring), Herodes (Salome), performed Aegisth (Elektra), Peter Grimes (Britten), Aron (Moses and Aron), Hauptmann (Wozzeck) and Schujski (Boris Godunov) and Hexe (Haensel and Gretel). With this repertoire he appeared as guest performer at the Staatsoper Vienna, at the Metropolitan Opera New York, at Dresden Semper Oper, Staatsoper Munich, in Tokyo and at the Opera of Rome.
In June 2014 he performed Aegisth (Elektra) in Katowice (Poland) with the Radio Symphony Orchestra in a concert version.
