In 2015, Vanessa Scammell conducted The Dream for The Australian Ballet, the national tour of From Broadway to La Scala (starring Teddy Tahu Rhodes, David Hobson, Lisa McCune and Greta Bradman) and was music director for Barry Humphries’ Adelaide Cabaret Festival. She returns to the Cabaret Festival in 2016, will act as Music Director for the Helpmann Awards and conduct the Australian premiere of The Light in the Piazza.
Vanessa Scammell graduated from Melbourne Conversation and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music as a pianist and conductor; she was the recipient the Brian Stacey Award for young conductors and The Robert and Elizabeth Albert Conducting Fellowship for The Australian Ballet.
She has acted as conductor, Music Director and Musical Supervisor for Australasia’s leading performing organizations – in concert, opera, ballet and musical theatre.
For Opera Australia, she has conducted national tours of South Pacific and La traviata and was Musical Director for their acclaimed 2015 television opera – The Divorce. Her Australian Ballet credits include Body Torque and Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker at the Sydney Opera House.
Vanessa has acted as conductor and musical director for some of music’s most celebrated artists – Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Kate Ceberano, Lea Salonga, Idina Menzel, Barry Humphries, Rhonda Burchmore, Lisa McCune, The Wiggles and many others. In the course of these collaborations, she has conducted the Sydney, Melbourne, West Australian, Adelaide, Christchurch and Queensland Symphony orchestras as well as a wide range of international ensembles.
For the Really Useful Company, she has acted as Musical Director for The Phantom of the Opera in Beijing, Taipei, Athens, South Korea, South Africa and throughout Australia; West Side Story Australian Tour for Farrelly Productions; Chicago Australasian Tour for Gordon Frost Organisation; The Producers and Damn Yankees for The Production Company and Fiddler on the Roof for TML Enterprises.
