Shane Lowrencev was born in Melbourne and, in 2000, graduated from the Melba Memorial Conservatorium with a Bachelor of Music. He furthered his studies at The Australian National Academy of Music and at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London.
While studying at the Melba, Shane received the Robert Salzer Scholarship Award for Operatic Potential as well as a Victoria University Scholarship. In 2008, he won the Opera Awards featuring the Youth Music Foundation of Australia Inc Award.
Shane is a full-time principal artist with Opera Australia. His roles have included – Baron Scarpia in Tosca, title roles in Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, Escamillo in Carmen, Schaunard in La bohème and principal bass roles in Bliss, La fanciulla de West and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He has also sung The King: Aida, Polyphemus: Acis and Galatea, Guglielmo: Così fan tutte, Capellio: I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Ferrando: Il trovatore, Baron Douphol: La traviata, Cascada: The Merry Widow, Cook: The Love For Three Oranges, Dick Deadeye: HMS Pinafore, Usher: Trial By Jury, Filiberto: Il Signor Bruschino, Pistola: Falstaff, Timur: Turandot, Monterone: Rigoletto, Betto di Signa: Gianni Schicchi, Basilio: Il barbiere di Siviglia, Melisso: Alcina, Lodovico: Otello, Nourabad: The Pearlfishers - all for Opera Australia. He also sang Colline in La bohème for West Australian Opera.
Shane has enjoyed a distinguished career on the concert platform having performed the bass solos in Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus, Messiah, La Resurrezione; Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Mozart’s Requiem, Mass in C Minor, Coronation Mass and Missa Brevis; Bach’s B Minor Mass, Sleepers Wake Cantata No.140, St John Passion, Magnificat, Christmas Oratorio and St Matthew Passion; Haydn’s Creation; Schubert’s Missa Brevis.
His roles for Opera Australia in 2012/2013 included Mozart’s Figaro, the 1st Nazarene in a new production of Salome, Scarpia in Tosca and Schaunard in La bohème; he also covered the role of Wotan/The Wanderer in Der Ring des Nibelungen.
In 2014, Shane Lowrencev reprised the roles of Schaunard and Escamillo and starred in two of Opera Australia’s new productions – as Prince Selim in Il turco in Italia and Leporello in Don Giovanni. For OA in 2015, he sings Scarpia, Leporello, Schaunard and The Count (in a new production of Le nozze di Figaro); he will also take the role of Brander in the Melbourne Symphony’s performances of Le damnation de Faust.
In 2016, Shane Lowrencev sings Escamillo and Schaunard for Opera Australia and appears as Hunding in Die Walküre for the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
