Spanish-born mezzo Sandra Ferrández studied at the Conservatory of Music Joaquín Rodrigo of Valencia, and also in Paris and Lübeck with Elena Obratzova, and Gundula Janowitz.
Having recently made a successful transition to the mezzo fach, Ferrández’ recent engagements have included Alisa Lucia di Lammermoor under the baton of Marco Armiliato at the Teatro del Liceu, Barcelona, Waltraute Die Walküre and Wellgunde in Das Rheingold for Opera de Oviedo, and Olga in Katiuska at the Palau de Les Arts, Valencia. Roles currently being added to her repertoire include Fennena, Carmen, Charlotte, Donna Elvira, and Dorabella.
Ferrández began her career as a soprano making her debut as a Giulietta in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, she went on to perform roles such as Jenufa, Nedda, Fiordiligi, First Lady, and Margared Le Roi d’Ys, the latter replacing Montserrat Caballé at short notice. She has performed both mezzo and soprano roles in leading houses such as Teatro Real Madrid, Teatro del Liceu Barcelona, Opéra Royal de Wallonie, Palau de Les Arts Reina Sofía de Valencia, Teatro Comunale di Treviso, Teatro de la Maestranza Seville, Opera de Oviedo, and Ópera de Lima, with leading conductors including Riccardo Chailly, Lorin Maazel, Sir Andrew Davis, Semyon Bychkov, Pier Giorgio Morandi, Ottavio Dantone, Jesús López Cobos, Miguel Ángel Gómez Martínez, Ivor Bolton, Víctor Pablo Pérez, Massimo Zanetti, Guillermo García Calvo, Enrique García Asensio, and Miguel Roa.
Widely recognised for her Zarzuela interpretations, she has performed leading roles in Luisa Fernanda with Simón Bolívar Orchestra in Caracas, Venezuela; La Verbena de la Paloma for the Teatro de la Zarzuela, Madrid; La Revoltosa at the Teatros del Canal, Madrid; Luisa Fernanda and La Leyenda del Beso for the Teatro Principal de Alicante; La Corte de Faraón by Vicente Lleó, and Zarzuelas en la Villa at the Teatro Fernando Fernán Gómez Madrid, and appeared in concert at the Nacional Auditorium de Madrid, Teatro Monumental Madrid, Palau de la Música in Valencia, Auditorium Manuel de Falla in Granada, and the Kennedy Center in Washington. She has also performed many contemporary and new music roles including Dulcinea by Mauricio Sotelo for Teatro Real Madrid; Una Voce in Off by Montsalvatge at the Teatro Principal of Palma de Majorca; El Gato con Botas at the Teatro Monumental Madrid and Teatro Principal of Burgos; and Maror by Manuel Palau for the Palau de Les Arts Reina Sofía de Valencia.
Futures engagements include her return to the Teatro de la Zarzuela, Madrid, Maria Moliner Misa Tango by Bakalov in Osaka, and Beethoven 9th Symphony on tour in Spain.
