Soprano Miina-Liisa Värelä (b. 1982) studied with her teacher Margareta Haverinen-Brandt at the Sibelius-Academy where she received her diploma in 2012 with excellent marks. She has also studied privately with Monika Hauswalter and continues her studies with Dale Fundling. Lied interpretation she has studied with Collin Hansen and Ilmo Ranta.
Miina-Liisa Värela made her debut in the autumn 2011 at the Finnish National Opera in the role of Ortlinde/Die Walküre. In Sibelius-Academy Värelä's roles have included Governess/The Turn of the Screw, Sylvienne/Die Lustige Witwe and First Witch/Dido & Aeneas.
In 2012 she sang Leonora/Il Trovatore at the Lahti Opera, First Lady/Die Zauberflöte at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, cover of Emilia Marty/The Makropulos Affair at the Finnish National Opera, Shostakovich’s Symphony no. 14 with Oulu Philharmonic Orchestra and Luke Dollman and as soloist with Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. In spring 2013 Värelä sang her debut as Elsa/Lohengrin in Vilnius National Opera. In summer 2013 she will perform the title role of the world premiere of Norppa –opera in Savonlinna Opera Festival where she will also give a recital.
Miina-Liisa Värelä was the young debutant of the Helsinki Festival 2011, during which she performed as the soloist of Mahler's 2nd Symphony with Ingo Metzmacher and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. As an active concert and lied singer Värela has appeared at Korsholm and Kangasniemi Music Festival, as a soloist with Kuopio Symphony Orchestra and Opernwerkstadt. In 2012 she appeared in Mahler’s 4th Symphony with Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra and Hannu Lintu, at Savonlinna Opera Festival gala-concerts with Kuopio Symphony Orchestra and at a concert with Turku Philharmonic Orchestra.
Värela is at home with wide-ranging lied repertoire and performs at regular basis with pianist Kiril Kozlovsky. She is also a member of the Improah! opera improvisation group.
Värelä won the Timo Mustakallio Singing Contest in July 2011. In the summer of 2009 she was awarded with the 1st price at Kangasniemi Singing Competition. In 2010 she was a finalist and special prize winner of the Lappeenranta Singing Competition. In 2010 she was awarded at the International Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna with Verena Keller scholarship.
Miina-Liisa Värelä received the scholarship of Matti Salminen –foundation in 2011.Värelä has also received scolarships from the Finnish Cultural Foundation, Wihuri –foundation and Selim Eskelin -foundation.
