Musically formed in Spain, France and England, Juanjo Guillem stands out for its versatility in his career as a percussionist. Soloist of the National Orchestra of Spain since 1999, he is also guest professor at the Conservatory of the Balearic Islands. He is also Artistic Director of the festivals Ritmo Vital and Konektarte Sonoro.
He has premiered in Spain pieces by international composers such as Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Gyorgy Ligeti, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis and Toshio Hosokawa, among many others. Many composers have dedicated him their works, as José Luis Turina, Jesus Torres, José María Sánchez Verdú, Mauricio Sotelo, Ramon Humet, etc.
Juanjo Guillem has worked with major national and international orchestras, such as the Orquesta Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga, Sinfónica de Madrid, St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic, Oviedo Frilarmonía, Orquesta de Cámara de Cascais,etc. He has performed with important conductors such as José Ramón Encinar, Pablo Gonzalez, Manuel Hernández Silva, Josep Pons, Edmond Colomer, Ernest Martinez Izquierdo, Philippe Bender, Jean Paul Penin, Eduardo Marturet or Mikhail Agrest, among others. As a soloist, he is specialized in contemporary music, giving recitals in Europe, Asia and America.
We can also highlight his work as a composer; he has received commissions from the Centro de Difusión de la Música Contemporánea, Festival de Música Religiosa de Cuenca, etc.
As a teacher, he has taught master classes at prestigious schools such as the Royal College and Royal Academy in London, Manhattan School of Music in New York, conservatories of Amsterdam, Montpellier, Basel, Strasbourg, Beijing, Seoul, etc... In 1994 he created the Center for Neopercusión with Juanjo Rubio, dedicated to the teaching and development of the percussion. As founder member of Neopercusión, he has been invited to major festivals like the Festival de Santander, Jornadas de música contemporánea de Alicante, Quincena Musical de San Sebastián, Fundación Juan March or Museo Reina Sofía, among many others.
He has recorded as soloist and as member of Neopercusión, for labels such as Kairos and Non Profit Music.
Juanjo Guillem only plays with Zildjian, Malleech, Novapercusio-Remo, Promusin and JEFF Mallets instruments.
