Ellie Laugharne studied on the Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. She began her vocal training at the Birmingham Conservatoire having previously completed a music degree at Birmingham University. She has since sung the title role in Stephen Oliver’s Euridice (Peri orch. Oliver) for BYO, Edna Tobias and the Angel (Dove) at the Buxton Opera Festival and Pamina Die Zauberflöte whilst at University. She has also performed a variety of roles in scenes at GSMD and with BYO including Sophie Werther, Sophie Der Rosenkavalier, Frasquita Carmen, Morgana Alcina, Nanetta Falstaff and Marzelline Fidelio.
Ellie won the 2011 Musicians’ Benevolent Fund Maggie Teyte Prize and Miriam Licette Scholarship and performed a recital in the Crush Room at the Royal Opera House. She has also performed a number of concerts at the Ryedale Festival accompanied by Christopher Glynn and is a Samling Artist.
Ellie’s studies at GSMD were generously supported by the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers, the Music Students’ Hostel Trust, the John Wates Charitable Trust and Serena Fenwick. Recent engagements have included Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro for BYO, Anna Reich Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor and Titania A Midsummer Night’s Dream both for GSMD, a pre-LSO recital at the Barbican Hall, a concert with pianist Ivana Gavrić at Kings Place in London and First Bridesmaid Le Nozze di Figaro for Glyndebourne Festival Opera and at the 2012 BBC Proms.
Other engagements have included Barbarina and Susanna Le Nozze di Figaro for Glyndebourne on Tour, Yum Yum in concert performances of The Mikado in Birmingham, Manchester and London’s Royal Festival Hall, Mabel The Pirates of Penzance for Scottish Opera, Sandrina La Finta Giardiniera for the Buxton Festival and Valencienne Merry Widow at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. Ellie was a Jerwood Young Artist with Glyndebourne for the 2012 Festival and sang Lucia The Rape of Lucretia for Glyndebourne Touring Opera in 2013.
Recent engagements include Governess Turn of the Screw with Opera Holland Park, workshops of Between two Worlds with Deborah Warner for ENO, Emirena in Adriano in Siria for Classical Opera, with whom she is currently an Associate Artist, Tina Flight for Opera Holland Park and Barbarina Le Nozze di Figaro for English National Opera and Opera North. Ellie also stepped in at the last minute as Susanna Le Nozze di Figaro whilst covering for Opera North in Belfast. Subsequent engagements include Beethoven Choral Fantasy at the Edinburgh International Festival, Frasquita Carmen Scottish Opera and Despina Cosi fan tutte for Opera North.
