David Charles Abell : One Voice Orlando Concert
In response to the tragic event at Pulse Nightclub, Opera Orlando coordinated One Voice Orlando – a Celebration in Song. This benefit concert featured some of opera’s brightest national stars and musicians from throughout Florida. Internationally-renowned David Charles Abell was our conductor and Legendary baritone Sherrill Milnes and News 13’s Ybeth Bruzual hosted the evening.
Performers include sopranos Ana Maria Martinez, Sarah Joy Miller and Cecilia Violetta López; mezzo soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano; tenors Javier Abreu, Corey Austin and Alex Mansoori; and baritones Davis Gaines and Mark Walters. Opera Orlando was joined by the Orlando Ballet’s Katie-Lynn Robichaux and Aracadian Broad; a full orchestra with professional players from across Central Florida; and an over 150 voice Opera Chorus from opera companies all over the state of Florida including Opera Tampa, St. Petersburg Opera, Opera Naples, First Coast Opera and others. All performers are donating their services to help maximize the funds going to charity.
A highlight of the concert was the world-premiere of "Light Shall Lift Us," by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec and Pulitzer Prize-winning lyricist Mark Campbell.
Opera Orlando and its partners in this benefit concert have selected Central Florida organizations that work to build understanding of our region’s diversity and address the interpersonal challenges that many people in their community face every day. These are the LGBT Center of Central Florida, Proyecto Somos Orlando, Holocaust Center’s “UpStanders: Stand Up To Bullying Initiative,” the Interfaith Council of Central Florida and the Zebra Coalition, which helps LGBTQ youth. But it was the Orlando Health’s Level One Trauma Center that was the impetus for the benefit concert in response to all of their work during and around the tragedy.
