Brian was a major prize-winner in conducting competitions in London and Milan. He was Assistant Conductor to André Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra and Associate Conductor to the BBC in London. He has conducted all the major British orchestras, winning particular praise for performances at the BBC Proms. He is a regular guest conductor in Britain and Europe, and in Asia he has toured in China with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted the Hong Kong Philharmonic and Singapore Symphony Orchestras.
In the UK, Brian is currently Music Director of Maidstone Symphony Orchestra and Goldsmiths Choral Union, London.
He enjoys a close association with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, regularly conducting in their London International Series. A highlight of 2006/7 was an acclaimed broadcast performance of Berlioz Grande Messe des Morts with the RPO at the Royal Albert Hall, and recent RPO seasons have included Berlioz Te Deum and Verdi Requiem.
In 2006/7 he was a guest conductor in Norway, Slovenia, and Romania. His 2007 MSO concerts included programmes of Mahler Symphony No. 6, Elgar Symphony No. 2 and Bruckner Symphony No. 6. In November he conducted Elgar Dream of Gerontius in the RPO’s Royal Albert Hall series and in December Handel Messiah with the RPO at a sold-out RAH.
Repertoire in 2008 included Rachmaninov Symphony No. 2, Debussy La Mer, Ravel La Valse, a Bach Triple Bill, Shostakovich Symphony No. 10, Bruckner Mass in E minor, and Elgar Dream of Gerontius in Worth Abbey.
Highlights of 2011 were the Maidstone Symphony Orchestra’s Centenary Concert and Mahler Symphony No. 5 with MSO, as well as a return to Bucharest to conduct the George Enescu Philharmonic in Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. In 2012, Brian Wright conducted Elgar and Vaughan Williams at the Royal Albert Hall with the RPO and a Mozart programme at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. In 2013, he conducted Handel Israel in Egypt at the QEH, and Mendelssohn Scottish Symphony with the RPO. In October he conducted the MSO in Britten, Elgar & Rachmaninov, and Walton Belshazzar’s Feast and Elgar Cello Concerto with the RPO at the Royal Festival Hall.
Recent concerts have included Verdi Requiem with the Philharmonia at the RFH, the MSO in Mendelssohn, Finzi & Beethoven, the Hastings International Piano Competition, and Schumann, Beethoven & Sibelius with MSO; and Brian Wright will conduct Bach Mass in B minor with Goldsmiths Choral Union at the QEH in June 2014.
